Meet the Host Girls in Gis Midwest Oklahoma City: Kat McClatchey

kat1Long time Midwest Girls in Gis member Kat  McClatchey has been apart of the movement in Oklahoma since our start January 2014. This is her first time hosting and we look forward to what she has in store for us. Kat has been training for five years. She is a four stripe blue belt at Academy of Martial Arts. We had a chance to chat with Kat about the upcoming event she will be hosting and she assured us it will be full of “lots of excitement!!!”

What motivated you to begin your Jiu-Jitsu journey? What has kept you motivated?

I actually started training BJJ for the self-defense aspect.  I had been in an abusive relationship in the past and my coach thought it would be a good idea for me to begin training Jiu Jitsu as a safety precaution.  At first, it was kind of a love-hate relationship.  Having someone in my “bubble” was a little awkward, but since having moved passed that, the biggest motivation for training is the fun!!!

Do you have any female only classes at your academy or opportunities to train with just women? Is this beneficial?

We do not have any female only classes, but we are completely open to women only rolling with other women.  We feel that a lot of females when they come in are not ready to roll with men, but once they have achieved a comfort level they are ok.

What benefits do you think BJJ brings to females? Why would you recommend BJJ to newcomers?  BJJ is a great way to get in shape and have fun!  I strongly recommend all females that come to our gym try BJJ for the amazing aspects of fitness and also for the self-defense aspect.

Come on out this weekend and join this amazing event. For more info click the photo below. See you there!
