Deep in the heart of Texas we found ourselves on March 13th at Girls in Gis Texas San Antonio. This was one heck of a way to start spring break off!!! The spring break awesomeness started off at Gracie Barra San Antonio with host black belt Fabiana Borges. It was a day for mothers and daughters, sisters, friends and new friends to be made. Girls came from far and wide to learn from the most accomplished and highest ranked female black belt in the state.
Fabiana is one of the only females to own and instruct a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Texas. Learning from such a seasoned instructor and competitor was a treat. She began the session with some fun loving warm ups that helped the group to not only get warmed up, but comfortable with each other too. It was a great ice breaker for girls to shake off any nerves from not having trained with each other before or at all. After the warm up it was time for Fabiana to shine. She led the group through a series of intricate technique that resulted in a sweet guard pass to side control transition. A place that Fabiana likes to work her magic from.
After instruction Fabiana led a few fun challenges for the adults and kids. The prizes are nice, but the laughter that is shared during the challenges are priceless. Congratulations to our winners! It isn’t often that most of these girls have the opportunity to get advice from a champion black belt. We opened up a quick Q&A session. And the it was time for everyone’s favorite part…rolling!!!
Girls in Gis events are about coming together for the love of Jiu-Jitsu regardless of academy affiliation or what belts we are. When you get down to the root of it all we are all the same because we love Jiu-Jitsu. Age doesn’t matter, ethnicity, religion, and economic classes don’t matter. We are all the same once our feet hit the mat. Jiu-Jitsu is a powerful gift we all share. Growing the sport as whole and learning from each other will only make us all better and we are stronger together!
Thank you Gracie Barra San Antonio, Fabiana Borges and everyone that joined us for this event. Thank you for continuing to support the movement and contributing to the cause. We are only three months into 2016 and so far it is looking like this is gonna be the best year yet!
