What is Girls in Gis?
Girls in Gis (GIG) is an organization dedicated to building and strengthening the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community for women and girls and as a whole. We provide experiences that foster the community of women and girls in the art/sport while encouraging new women and girls to participate. Thereby increasing the presence of women and girls in a primary male dominated sport/art and paving the way to equality and change. By coming together through our events we are growing the sport and art for women and girls everywhere. Our goal is to empower and unite women and girls in their martial arts training as well as in life.
What are Girls in Gis Events?
Girls in Gis events are free training session for women and girls of all skill levels. Each session will be instructed by a women or women in the local area. The event will include some technique and some training. All events are donation based.
What are Girls in Gis Special Events?
Girls in Gis special events are our way of celebrating our inaugural events in new regions or events that feature local brown and back belt women instructors. These events are made possible because of donations. Our goal is to contribute to each community by providing a unique opportunity to bring together and showcase the talent in the region. Girls in Gis Special events participation requires a minimum donation. A portion of the proceeds from these donations go to our guest instructors and to further the Girls in Gis program.
What are Girls in Gis Camps and Seminars?
Girls in Gis camps and seminars provide a unique opportunity for women and girls to train with world class black belt women from around the world while providing monetary opportunities for these instructors. Pricing for camps and seminars vary.
Do I have to be a female to participate?
Girls in Gis events are designed by women for women and girls to provide a leadership opportunity, educational experiences and unite the community. All those that identify as women are welcome to attend.

Is there an age requirement?
All events are open to women and girls of ALL ages. We encourage women and girls of all ages to participate. Whether you are three years old or in your sixties this is the place for you. It is a great bonding experience for friends and family to share the love of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Some seminars have a minimum age requirement. Check details of seminar for further details.
Do I have to have experience to participate?
No experience is required to participate.
One of the common concerns women and girls have and reasons they never set foot in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is it can be intimidating. They are intimidated by a class full of sweaty guys and don’t know how they will be received. That’s what makes Girls in Gis ideal for new women and girls wanting to become involved in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Girls in Gis events provide a fun and friendly environments that encourages women and girls to succeed in BJJ.

Are Girls in Gis events just for beginners?
All skill levels are welcome to participate. We have participants from all belt levels training together at your events. This is a great opportunity for experienced women and girls to train with more women and girls their size and skill level.
Do I have to participate the entire event?

Participation during the entire during of the event is encouraged. However you are not required to participate the entire time. Feel free to take breaks whenever you need to for any reason. If you have a condition or injury we encourage you to let the guest instructor and ambassadors know.
If you have to leave early or arrive late we ask that you please contact us prior to the event.

What team is Girls in Gis affiliated with?
Girls in Gis is not affiliate with any one team or academy. The purpose of Girls in Gis is to bridge the gap between academies and provide a fun, friendly, non-competitive environment for women and girls to come together and share their love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our goal is to have women and girls from all academies feel comfortable training with each other so that we can learn from each other and grow the sport/art. Each Girls in Gis is hosted at a different academy throughout the chapter and instructed by the resident woman or women of that academy. This provides an opportunity for everyone to host and share their knowledge..
How do I sign up to host a Girls in Gis event at my academy? Are their requirements?
If you’d like to host a Girls in Gis event send us your name, contact information, school and belt level. We will send you information on how to host and the requirements for the hosting guest instructor and facility.
Can I come to watch?
Due to the nature of our program and limited space at our events spectatorship is limited to parents or chaperones only. Exceptions are made on a case by case basis. Contact us if you have questions.
How much does it cost?
Girls in Gis events are donation based. Girls in Gis Special Events and various other events require a minimum donation. Pricing for Girls in Gis camps and seminars vary.
What do I wear?
Gi uniform is not required, but most ideal. We suggest you borrow one from someone you know who trains or e-mail us and we will let you borrow one if they are available. Underneath the gi we recommend you wear shorts and a rash guard, t-shirt or tank top and sports bra.
If you are unable to acquire a gi we suggest comfortable workout attire. This would consist of a sports bra under a t-shirt, rash guard or tank top along with shorts or spats.
How does Girls in Gis fund their programs?
Girls in Gis provides events nationwide through donations and merchandise sales. Donations and proceeds from merchandise sales also go toward our Girls in Gis scholarship program to provide financially disadvantaged women and girls with tuition assistance, uniform (gi and no gi) and competition stipends. Currently we award anywhere between 1- 6 scholarships a month. Proceeds from Girls in Gis special events are donated to our guest instructors in order to provide paid teaching opportunities for women.
